Ikora's role in the Vanguard is to study enemy threats, particularly any unconventional threats posed by the forces of Darkness, and is typically the first to react to them. She employs a group of spies called The Hidden to go behind enemy lines, serving as her eyes and ears. Ikora is the only one who listens to one of these spies, Eris Morn, whom others call mad or avoid out of fear. She tasks Guardians with stopping construction of The Nexus on Venus, the summoning of Phogoth on the Moon, and the attempt to return the Black Garden to the Darkness.

Laid back, carefree, down-to-earth and adventurous are among the best words to describe Cayde-6. Though Cayde can appear to be lazy and bored with his duties as Hunter Vanguard, he actually takes them serious, more so than he would admit. Originally, Cayde wanted to continue his solo Guardian career but after his friend, Andal Brask, was murdered did he put that aside and assumed his place to honor his friend. Despite this, he longs to get back into the field. Regardless, while he may appear to put Guardians on dangerous paths, deep down he cares about their safety and even calls them his "greatest success story". In addition, he was saddened at the loss of another one of his friends, the Nightstalker Tevis Larsen. As Hunter Vanguard, his carefree attitude and playing loose with the rules annoys if not aggravates his fellow teammates, Zavala and Ikora, he is loyal to them and would support them no matter what. Though Zavala finds Cayde to be unorthodox, he respects him and admits that if there was anything he learned from Cayde is that one should make a grand entrance. With Ikora, she at times retaliates against Cayde's jokes with witty jests of her own. In the rare moments when Cayde is serious, the situation really is dire.

Zavala was born sometime before the Collapse, and was revived by a Ghost into a Guardian. He traveled to the famous camp that would eventually become The Last City, helping to build the city alongside people such as a younger Speaker.
Zavala eventually became a student of Lord Saladin, and fought in the Battle of the Twilight Gap. Later, after parting ways with Lord Saladin, he was a competitor in the Crucible. As Commander, multiple factions have approached him to try and gain his support. In particular, he was approached by New Monarchy via Executor Hideo, and was offered to be made king of the City if he had joined their faction, but he refused, likely not wanting to reignite the Faction Wars. He also turned away Arach Jalaal when he pleaded with him for support. However, he did vouch for Future War Cult's inclusion into the Consensus, considering their focus on combat more useful to the City than dangerous

Bold, proud and fierce are the words that could best define Lord Shaxx. Next to Zavala, Shaxx is a perfect exemplar of the Titan Guardian. The Crucible handler is completely dedicated to the mission in preparing the Guardians for whatever force the Darkness brings, acting as a tough but encouraging mentor to them. He praises those who perform admirably or put up a decent fight while being harsh to those who fall short, normally berating them to do better. Despite this, Shaxx doesn't see a match lost as failure but as a lesson to learn from, as he explained to the children he trained during the Dawning. In addition, Shaxx normally looks for ways to create new challenges in the Crucible, either in new maps or match types, as he doesn't want the Guardians to grow complacent to the regular matches.

Shaxx takes his responsibilities in the Crucible very seriously but is aware of how most look upon the Crucible as a glorified arena and how the Consensus factions and Weapons foundries use it to further their agendas. For this reason, he is uncompromising on how he runs it, refusing to let others try to influence it or even cheat. Another reason he's distrustful of the Consensus is how they launched the mission to reclaim the moon from the Hive, despite his loud protests on learning more about their enemies, resulted in nothing but the slaughter of countless Guardians.
Lord Shaxx also possess a nearly unbreakable will, as he simply refuses to give up on any obstacle, whether it is in battle or researching a difficult weapon like the Swords. Even when the Last City fell and Zavala began to lose faith, Shaxx never faltered in their chances in defeating the Red Legion and reclaiming the Last City.

At time, Shaxx can be prideful, as he refuses to back down from a challenge, even from Cayde-6, which led to him losing a bet. Even so, he honors his end of a bet, as Shaxx agreed, albeit grudgingly, to train a few children in a game of dodge ball, in a manner similar to the Crucible.
While most of the other individuals in the Tower have respect for at least one class of Guardian, Lord Shaxx respects them all, normally finding the best qualities in each and never favoring one over the others.

While a member of the Iron Lords, Saladin and his comrades discovered SIVA, a self-replicating nanotechnology created during the Golden Age. They believed it could be used to aid them in protecting humanity, but it turned against them. Unable to destroy the techno-virus, the Iron Lords sealed it beneath the earth. However, the virus claimed the Iron Lords, and Saladin was one of the only two to survive.

Saladin was previously Vanguard Commander during the Battle of Twilight Gap, and led the City's defense during the battle, alongside his students Lord Shaxx and Commander Zavala. Though he remains on good terms with Zavala, his relationship with Shaxx has become strained due to his defiance of orders during the battle, where he instead led a counterattack on the Fallen, pushing them off the City's walls.

One year after the events of the Taken War, the Fallen and the House of Devils managed to unearth SIVA, and their Splicers tried to harness the technology. Unable to defeat the mutant Devils on his own, Saladin began seeking out Guardians to help him form a new generation of the Iron Lords to end the threat of SIVA once and for all.

Eris was one of six Guardians who descended into the Hellmouth to kill the Hive god Crota in revenge for the deaths of thousands of Guardians who had tried to reclaim the Moon during The Great Disaster. Though the other five members of her Fireteam, Eriana-3, Toland, the Shattered, Omar Agah, Vell Tarlowe, and Sai Mota, died during the venture and her own Ghost was lost, Eris managed to survive in the Hellmouth's shadowy warrens for years. She lost her eyes to the Hive, but replaced them with those of a Hive enemy, third eye included. Eris learned much about the Hive and its hierarchy, eventually finding a way to leave the moon and return to Earth

Amanda was born on the road, once a refugee before coming to the City. Her people were scavengers, and her childhood was spent fixing up vehicles that helped her family survive. Her mother carried a weapon named The Chaperone, a finely decorated double-barreled shotgun that helped shepherd Amanda to the City. Her mother died on the road, and her shotgun was buried with her.

Amanda was responsible for outfitting Eris Morn's ship with stealth technology, at the behest of Cayde-6. When she asked Cayde the purpose of the flight for the log, and not believing his lies, he told her the truth about his plan to use in for an unsanctioned mission to board the Dreadnaught. Amanda chose to log it as a "test flight". Later, Amanda worked with Tex Mechanica to recreate her mother's shotgun, the Chaperone, and award a copy of it to the winner of a Crucible contest. She also helped bring the Sparrow Racing League to the mainstream, acting as host for the races, and assisting Guardians in obtaining Licenses

Shiro-4 long served as a protégé to Cayde-6 before the latter's rise to the Vanguard post and was believed to have wielded the Trespasser Exotic sidearm. Free of the burden of leadership that ties his mentor to the Tower, Shiro willingly aids the Vanguard whenever his skills are requested. Tasked with tracking and eliminating Fallen threats, Shiro has traditionally spent most of his time making runs between Earth, Luna and Venus—gathering intel and engaging in hit-and-run attacks on active Fallen crews. Shiro's selflessness—combined with his talents for tracking, weapons-crafting, and combat—makes Shiro an invaluable extension of the Vanguard’s will beyond the City.

Petra was raised on Amethyst by the Techeuns. When the settlement was attacked by the Silent Fang during the Reef Wars, she became one of the Queen's Corsairs out of a desire for revenge. She made a name for herself during the Hildean Campaign as an accomplished soldier. Her pride eventually led her to make a devastating career failure; during the hunt for Veliniks, the Ravenous, she called in an airstrike that resulted in three strike teams of Guardians dead. With City-Reef relations deteriorating, Queen Mara demoted Petra to Emissary and exiled her to the Last City. Petra was uncomfortable living in the City, regarding its inhabitants as ignorant of their place in the world. After years of exile, she pleaded with the Queen to end her exile and allow her to return to the Reef

Variks had lived among the House of Wolves as a scribe and witnessed the Uprising on Cybele under Skolas. Unable to abide the attack on civilians, he contacted the crows and helped put an end to the uprising, with Skolas being captured (It's likely that Variks already hated Skolas, as he claims he is responsible for the removal of his arms). From that day, Variks served the Queen, in an effort to keep the House of Judgment and its ancient traditions alive in the face of increasing degradation under the rule of the Kells.

Variks wishes to see the Fallen restored to lawful, peaceful rule. He harbors some lingering jealousy for the other races, especially humanity, as the Traveler had chosen them for its patronage and left the Fallen with nothing, not even memories of former glory. Others such as Petra Venj suspect he has ulterior motives, going so far as to suggest that Variks might become the Kell of Kells. She claims he "holds too many alliances," and that his true allegiance is only to whoever serves his interests best.
When Uldren was believed to be dead Variks was given control of the Crows, and now he is using them to find the Kell of Kells in order to save the Fallen.

Variks, using the Crows, observed the SIVA Crisis and was disgusted with the Devil Splicers use of SIVA on themselves and on a Prime Servitor, mocking Sepiks Perfected. In silent contemplation, Variks wondered if he could have stopped his people from using such dangerous technology but resolved to find a way to stop his people from falling.

Mara initiated the Reef Wars because she realized that if the Wolves succeeded in joining the other Fallen houses during the Battle of Twilight Gap, the City would fall. Rather than risk losing a potential ally in order to remain hidden, she launched a surprise attack on the Fallen at Ceres. She succeeded in not only killing their Kell Virixas, but also pitting the remaining Wolf leaders against one another. With the help of Variks, The Loyal, she overthrew the remainder of the House and set herself up as Kell.

Prince Uldren played a pivotal role in the Reef Wars; he successfully cracked the Wolves' encryption, which led to Drevis, Wolf Baroness' capture. He and his Crows were also instrumental in breaking the Siege of Pallas through the use of illusions, and of learning of the Cybele Uprising through Variks' tipoff.

He participated in the Battle of Saturn and is the only known survivor, as his ship crashed on Mars. However, his survival was unknown at the time, as control of the Crows passed to Variks. Uldren suspected that his sister survived the battle, as he could still sense her. He then spent the rest of the Taken War and throughout the SIVA Crisis to search for her, evading everyone including his own followers. His last known report indicated he allowed himself to be captured in order to find the Kell of Kings, to raise an army via some unclear means. He also indicated that his sister approved of his actions.

Suraya possess a conflicted view of the Last City and the Guardians; while she respects the Guardians for their abilities and their priority of defending people, she finds the City and its walls to be equivalent of a prison as she has enjoyed the open freedom of the wild. While she aided the survivors of the Last City and the crippled Guardians, she was originally against the idea of reclaiming the City or even going against enemy forces, preferring to protect those at the Farm.

Despite this mindset, Suraya aided the Vanguard in their efforts in reclaiming the Last City, becoming instrumental in getting their forces through the Wall undetected. She also saves Commander Zavala, who shows his gratitude by naming her Guardian. From then on, Suraya takes residence at the new Tower, learning about the Last City and its history while overseeing missions in the European Dead Zone.

Devrim Kay VIII is a human male who acts as a European Dead Zone scout, helping to aid the Guardians in their recovery efforts. As a former member of the Forces of the City, he has a lot of experience fighting the enemies of humanity. He is an old friend of Suraya Hawthorne. Devrim provides missions for Guardians to undertake in his church outpost within the Trostland. He is something of a linguist, prone to going on long tangents about City and Fallen dialects if given the opportunity, and is fond of tea.

Hideo is one of New Monarchy's Executors, a high-ranking position with some form of legal authority. Before joining New Monarchy, he was a Plasteel manufacturer who made generous donations to the people of the City. He has a dim view of his faction's rivals, calling Dead Orbit spineless and Future War Cult "all secrets and nonsense". He also isn't pleased with the Speaker's perceived inaction or Zavala's unwillingness to join him. Instead, he puts his faith in the City and the possibility of returning to the Golden Age.

Lakshmi-2 is talkative enough about war stories and the accomplishments of Future War Cult, but is otherwise tight-lipped about the inner workings of her faction. She views the coming of the Darkness as an inevitable conflict, one that cannot be simply avoided, as Dead Orbit wishes. She is always pondering aloud about the nature of time, fate, and the existence of alternate timelines, particularly ones without war.

When Oryx invaded the star system aboard his Dreadnaught, Jalaal was ordered by Commander Zavala to keep Dead Orbit's fleet away from Saturn in case it was needed to defend the City. When Dead Orbit detected a signal from the Cabal being sent out of the system from the Dantalion Exodus VI, Jalaal informed Zavala, who sent a Guardian to investigate the crashed warship. While the Guardian successfully stopped the signal, they confirmed it was a distress call meant for Dominus Ghaul, Emperor of the Cabal Empire. Jalaal and Dead Orbit analyzed the message and reported to Zavala that the signal was received. He placed all of Dead Orbit's deep space assets on alert to watch for a response to the distress signal

Jalaal is fatalistic, and has a dismissive opinion towards the other factions of the City. He believes that the denizens of Earth must leave the world for a new one, and that the Darkness cannot be stood against.
